Crypto License in Lithuania: Everything You Need to Know

Lithuania has quickly positioned itself as one of Europe’s most crypto-forward countries. With a streamlined regulatory approach and fast licensing processes, it’s become a go-to destination for crypto startups and established businesses alike.

But with MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) coming into force across the EU, things are changing - fast. Any crypto company operating in Lithuania or elsewhere in the EU will need to transition to a CASP license to remain compliant and legally active in the market.

So, what does this mean for your business? Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a CASP License in Lithuania?

A CASP license (Crypto-Asset Service Provider license) is the new legal standard for crypto businesses in the EU. Under MiCA, it replaces the old VASP (Virtual Asset Service Provider) structure and introduces stricter requirements for transparency, consumer protection, and AML compliance.

In Lithuania, CASP licenses are issued and regulated by the Financial Crime Investigation Service (FCIS).

You’ll need a CASP license if your company offers services like:

  • Crypto custody or wallet services
  • Crypto exchanges or trading platforms
  • Crypto-to-crypto or fiat-to-crypto transactions
  • Executing trades or orders for clients
  • Crypto payments or fund transfers
  • Investment advice or portfolio management related to crypto assets

CASP License Timeline in Lithuania

MiCA’s rollout includes strict deadlines, and Lithuania is no exception. Here’s what’s ahead:

  • December 30, 2024 - MiCA officially takes effect across the EU
  • TBD 2025 - Deadline to submit CASP license applications (final date to be confirmed)

If your business is currently registered as a VASP in Lithuania, you'll need to transition to a CASP license before the grace period ends.

CASP License Requirements in Lithuania

To obtain and maintain a CASP license in Lithuania, companies must meet several key requirements:

  • Register with FCIS (Financial Crime Investigation Service)

  • Establish a local presence (at least one board member must reside in the EU)

  • Fulfill capital requirements (usually €125,000 to €150,000 depending on services)

  • Set up robust AML and KYC policies

  • Implement real-time transaction monitoring and comply with the FATF Travel Rule
